West Virginia State and Local Government
Internship Program
The Institute for Public Affairs provides both graduate and undergraduate students at West Virginia University who are interested in pursuing a career in law or public service an opportunity to experience, first-hand, what it is like to work with and to conduct research for state and local government officials. Recently, students administered a state-wide survey of West Virginia's residents to determine their perceptions of the state's political processes and public officials, assisted in the preparation of articles for The West Virginia Public Affairs Reporter, worked with members of the state legislature and Morgantown city government, and provided valuable editorial assistance in the publication of both the Institute's Technical Report Series and the Policy Monograph Series.

Quotes From West Virignia State and Local Government Interns

Tammy Bowles, Intern for a State Delegate

"I like the responsibility that came with this internship. I've held many jobs what I wasn't interested in, and I would not feel as if I would be missed if I was unable to come. But, as an intern (with this program) I knew that everyday I had some kind of responsibility that was important and that propelled me to work harder and become a fast learner in new areas. I think I had an incredible experience."

Megan Denison, Intern for West Virginia Public Radio

"I enjoyed this internship very much. To my surprise, I learned that I love researching. With every assignment I had, I learned something new. I would recommend this internship to anyone who is interested in government, research, public policy, or the news in general."

Cory Fuller, Intern for the City of Morgantown's Code Enforcement Department

"I learned a tremendous amount from my experience. I actually have been asked to come back next Fall for (a paid position). This internship has taught me a great deal about how city government works. The political lessons I have learned have been invaluable..."

Asha Sahijwani, Intern for a State Delegate

"The internship gave me a whole new appreciation for the political process. Learning about government is much richer when it is hands on and interactive. Interning helped me to remember and apply information I had learned in my basic political science courses. Through this internship, I actually understand more about political science than I ever have."
