How to Publish a Web site


There are several ways to publish your web siute to the www.polsci.wvu.edu Server


Most web page editors contain a means to publish the pages. This information pages covers 3 of them.


Using Visual Page

Visual page has a publish mechanism built into it. It is slightly cumbersome at first but after you use it, it gets fairly easy.

Click File > Open FTP Site

The following dialogue box opens

Alter your User name and Password. You may leave the directory line empty if you want your top level folder.

Your Visual Page window will look something like this:

Yours will likely have fewer Folders! Note the extra button bar at the top. The second button from the left is the Publish Button. It will open the following dialogue box.

Make sure that you are in the proper directory, and double click on the file name you wish to publish. Or click all of the file names you wish to transfer, click the Add button, and when you have them all listed, click the Publish button.

Your files are now on the server, and published to the world.

Using Internet Explorer


Internet Explorer is perhaps an easier way to transfer files. It requires only three steps:

  1. Open IE
  2. Type in the address of the WVU Political Science server in the address bar: ftp://www.polsci.wvu.edu (or click here - you may have to "Refresh" the page to get the logon dialog box. )
  3. Enter your User ID and password - Remember that it is case sensitive.
  4. Click the Folders button and note that you are currently in the www.polsci.wvu.edu spot on the Internet exploer part of the Folder listing
  5. Find and click on the folder where you pages to be transfered are stored.
  6. Drag any files you wish to transfer from the folder listing on the right and drop them on top of the www.polsci.wvu.edu 'Folder' on the left.
  7. Your files are now published!
