Research Webs - Editorial Guidelines

Establishment of a credible vehicle for Web-based publication of research will require that a set of publication guidelines be developed and adhered to by a broad community of participants. The preliminary guidelines listed here seek to initiate the development of such guidelines. The Editorial Board will review these guidelines periodically and establish the criteria for selection of research and its incorporation into a PSWEB-L Research Web. The following are the initial standards for publication.
  • General Requirements
    • Pages submitted for incorporation into a Research Web must:
      • pertain to political science, broadly defined,
      • have sufficient original research content to warrant publication, and
      • be submitted for review.
    • All materials submitted must be HTML documents or related application.
    • Pages may be submitted by URL, e-mail or on diskette.
    • Pages accepted for publication become part of the community Research Web.
    • Authorship will be attributed on the individual pages, along with the authorship of significant revisions.
  • Style Guides
    • Pages should be written in relatively short sections that range from about 1-5 standard printed pages in length.
    • Graphics, apart from those required by PSWEB-L, should be kept to a minimum.  Writers should target for under 50K including all images and applications.  Larger pages should be broken into two or more if possible.
    • All pages should conform to the standard background, link, visited link and text colors (as yet undetermined).
  • Peer Review.
    • Pages may be submitted for review by sending the URL of the existing page to the Editor. If adopted for incorporation, the author may elect to retain the page on his/her server of choice, or have the page placed on the PSWEB-L server.
  • Revisions
    • Unlike the print media, Web pages may be easily edited. Therefore, it is anticipated that not only will revision occur, but that it is a desirable feature of Research Webs.
    • Stylistic Revisions and typographical errors may be submitted by the author with only the Editor/Moderator's decision. on inclusion.
    • Substantive revisions must be submitted for review using underline and overstrike HTML tags to denote changes in the text.
    • Substantive revisions may be submitted by individuals other than the original author.  The editorial board will make appropriate decisions regarding consultation with the original author. (This will be a difficult area.)
    • Submissions which extend or counter the arguments made in an existing Research Web page will usually be treated as separate pages as well, with minor editorial changes made to the original page to establish links to the appropriate extensions or countervailing position. (Research Webs will thus be able to handle multiple competing hypotheses within the same literature.)
  • Technical Issues
    • Submissions must be made by URL or diskette with all supporting images and applications (i.e. JAVA or CGI scripts)
    • Pages accepted for publication will be maintained on the PSWEB-L server (for now).  Author's may mirror their own pages if desired.
  • Changes to these guidelines
    • These guidelines are a working set, placed here for public discussion.  Please address any questions, comments or suggestions to Bob Duval
