Students in International Studies have the opportunity to participate in a variety of non-traditional course simulations
of international affairs and foreign policy. Currently, these are Model United Nations, Model Organizations of
American States, and a foreign policy crisis simulation course (ICONS). Each of these activities involves student
teams that "role play" the foreign policy positions of a foreign country on a variety of international
issues in either an international organization or diplomatic setting. These exercises are a lively exposure to
the actual dynamics of international negotiations and foreign policy decision making. Each is offered as part of
a three-credit class and can count towards the capstone requirement for the I.S. major. These activities are generously
funded by the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences.
Model UN
Model United Nations provides an experience in the diplomacy and negotiation surrounding global issues with the
framework of this global international organization.
The International Communication and Negotiation Simulations (ICONS) Project offers opportunities for high school
and university students from around the world to participate in Internet-based negotiation simulations.
The Model Organization of American States provides students with interests in Latin America with a negotiations
simulation focused on hemispheric issues and international politics.
