This area of emphasis is designed to for students with an interest in working the private sector for companies
involved in international trade and finance. Required courses include business courses in accounting and economic
statistics as well as analytic classes in international and comparative economics. Students select four more analytic
courses (12 hours) in the areas of development, geography, U.S. foreign policy, and international politics, as
well as several areas of business. Among these courses, Political Science 361 emphasizes international organization
and transnational relations with an emphasis on political economy and is therefore highly recommended. Finally,
this area of emphasis requries three cross-cultural courses (9 hours) for a particular region: Europe, East Asia,
the Americas, or Africa/Middle East. Students with strong language skills are encouraged to take commercial language
courses. A foreign study experience is strongly recommended. WVU has several programs that are focused on international
business and economics (e.g., ones in Cuba, China, and Italy), and courses taken on these programs can count towards
the above requirements. See the study abroad section for information on these programs.
